The Coastside Edible Garden Club promotes fruit and vegetable gardening along the San Mateo County coastline. Our members are located south of San Francisco in the Half Moon Bay area, spanning the communities between Pescadero and Pacifica. The foggy coastal climate is particularly challenging for vegetable gardening, so we are all learning how to cope with it together.
The club operates online via an email list, which members use to ask questions and offer advice to each other, or just swap gardening tidbits.
We also meet in person about once a month at a member's home to share our gardening experiences. Each meeting usually focuses on a particular topic, with an expert giving a short presentation. We've had experts on biointensive gardening, permaculture, composting, gophers, fruit tree pruning, beekeeping, medicinal herbs, and more.
A few times a year, the club arranges group tours of local farms and other places of common interest.

Discussion: After each film, there will be a discussion on ways to reduce energy use, prevent carbon dioxide emissions and contribute to the sustainability of the earth.

Paramount Classics has made a gift of 4,000 Inconvenient Truth DVDs to houses of worship all over the country through a faith-based ecological sustainability organization called Interfaith Power and Light (IPL). IPL is a non-partisan ministry that works with congregations to reduce pollution through energy audits, efficient lighting and appliances, supporting the development of clean energy and providing education.
The Social Concerns Prayer Group, a newly formed group at the Methodist Church, are sponsoring the film. What’s the connection between a church and global warming? Global warming is not a political issue; it is a moral issue. People of most faith traditions are called to love one another and to be responsible stewards of God’s creation. As we saw in New Orleans, the ones who suffer most during natural disasters are the poor. We must start planning now to support those who will be affected in our community when the effects of global warming strike. Although the film offers potential solutions for global warming if we act now, it portends extreme disruption of life as we know it.

Students, parents and teachers are especially invited to attend. Mark your calendars for May 13th 2006 for the first Coastside Solar Home Tour. We will offer tours of around 10 homes on the Coastside that have already been outfitted with clean silent solar cells or other energy efficiency upgrades.
You can talk to the owners and get an update on how their experience has been installing and operating their systems.
In addition, we will host some guest speakers and a set of vendor displays at a central location so you can meet up with folks who can help you get started on your own solarization.
We all know we can't keep on living on our cheap petroleum lottery forever--especially since it is no longer cheap and likely never will be again. It is time to start building the homes and communities that make sense for a post-petroleum age.
Solar is simple, practical and makes economic sense. You can save money while helping the environment and showing your children that you care about the world they will inherit.
But forget all that, the real reason is that it feels so good watching your power meter run backwards!
